As an Amazon seller, obtaining product liability insurance is essential. As with any retailer, there are always risks that your business or customers face when transacting with your store. Regardless of how safe you claim your products are or how tested they are against certain risks, there are always the possibility that something could go wrong. The policy protects your company from claims alleging third-party bodily injury or property damage caused by your product. It commonly protects you against legal defence costs arising from the lawsuit regardless of its outcome. General Liability including product liability insurance is the most commonly purchased type of business insurance by small business owners primarily because it provides comprehensive protection.
Amazon Seller Insurance Requirements
As per September 1, 2021 update from Amazon, all sellers who make over $10,000 in monthly sales on the Amazon platform must acquire a general liability insurance policy that meets the following criterion:
- At least a $1 million limit - Your insurance policy must cover business operations, personal injury, property damage, and product liability for at least $1 million per occurrence and in aggregate. It can be an umbrella or CGL policy with excess liability.
- Additional insureds - When you purchase an insurance policy, include Amazon as an additional insured. It provides a level of protection if they're named in a lawsuit against products bought via their website.
- Coverage proof - Proof of insurance may be requested at any time by Amazon and when they do you may have to send certificate of insurance to the Seattle headquarters.
Overview
Product Liability insurance - CGL protects your business against third-party property damage claims and bodily injury. At first glance, you might think your mostly online-based business doesnt need this coverage. But these days that is simply not the case. Unique liability challenges exist for Amazon sellers and product liability insurance is designed for any business that sells, manufactures, or distributes a product to consumers. If a consumer purchases a products and suffer a personal injury or property damage, they could file a claim against your Amazon shop or even sue your shop for the damages caused. These liability claims or litigation processes can be costly and without proper product liability insurance, the repercussions and damages might be difficult for your online business to recover from.
